Leaf Structure - Morphology


Leaf is one of important organ in plant. Leaf has shape of widening flat and commonly has green colour because contains chloroplast in its cells. Some leaf have needle shape like in pines and cactus. Leaf sticks in the stem.
Based on its composition, leaf is separated in two kinds: simple leaf and compound leaf. Simple leaf only has a lamina on its stalk, while compound leaf has more than one lamina on its stalk. Compound leaf divide into three kinds: palmately compound, pinnately compound and bipinately compound. Based on the venation, leaf divide into: pinnate, parallel, and palmate. Pinnate (pinnatous leaf) and Palmate (palmatous leaf) are commonly found in dicotyledon plants, while parallel leaf commonly found in monocotyledon plants. According to it's shape leaf divide in eight types: liniear, obovate, ovate, pinnately lobed, palmately lobed, reniform, lanceolate and sagittate. Based on it's margin, leaf divide into: entire, crenate, dentate,serrate, and lobed. And according to the arrangement in the stem, leaf described as follows: alternate leaf, opposite leaf and whorled.
